What is a firewall?
A firewall is a software program designeded to provide a 'security barrier' between the protected network or protected computer and a public network such as the Internet or a mobile network. It is designed to prevent unauthorised access and potential damage to the protected network or protected computer.
How does it work?
Firewalls can be installed on server computers, personal computers, or mobile devices, or on dedicated security appliances. All communication entering or leaving the protected network is examined by the firewall. Incoming communication that does not meet the security criteria specified by the security administrator is blocked and prevented from accessing the protected network or device. Communications that meet the security criteria, or communication that does not meet the criteria but is expressly authorised may pass through the firewall.
